About the work
A one-fascicle anonymous (失譯) mandala-sūtra. Taishō prints it under the composite number 1168 alongside Făxián’s T1168A (KR6j0391). No translator-colophon. The text appears to be a fragmentary or partial recension of the Aṣṭamaṇḍalaka-sūtra — opening with truncated and irregular formula 如是我一婆 (rather than the standard 如是我聞一時) — suggesting either textual damage in the transmitted source or an early/abbreviated recension. CANWWW lists it as related to KR6j0390 (T1167) and KR6j0391 (T1168A).
Abstract
The text opens with the Buddha (Bhagavān — phonetically transcribed 婆伽梵 across line-break) at Potalaka-mountain (布得攞迦山, alternate transliteration of Potalaka) abiding in the Avalokiteśvara Palace (觀自在宮殿) with an immeasurable hundred-thousand-koṭi-fold bodhisattva-assembly. The narrative-frame is the same as T1167 / T1168A but the Chinese transliteration of Potalaka is different (布得攞迦 rather than 補陀落迦), and the formulary peculiarities (irregular ru-shi-wo-yi-po-jiāfán) suggest a separate translation tradition. The text content tracks the Eight Great Bodhisattvas mandala material. Without a colophon, the text is undatable on internal evidence; the dating bracket spans the broad Tang–Sòng range over which Aṣṭamaṇḍalaka material was active in Chinese translation.
