A one-fascicle Tang Esoteric ritual handbook (niànsòng yíguǐ) on the One-Topknot Mañjuśrī-Kumāra (一髻文殊 = Eka-jaṭa Mañjuśrī) — Mañjuśrī in his single-locked, child-form aspect — translated/compiled by the obscure Jīngāng Fúshòu (金剛福壽).

Abstract

The work opens with the dhāraṇī of the One-Topknot Mañjuśrī in transcribed Sanskrit, beginning namo Mañjuśriye kumāra-bhūtāya tadyathā oṃ śri-gala-vi mahā-kha-la-vi a-la-mā-ka-la-vi sa-ma-sā-manta-ka-la-vi svāhā (rendered as 曩謨曼祚室哩曳矩麼羅部跢野怛涅他唵室哩伽攞陛摩護佉攞陛阿攞麼伽攞陛娑麼三滿多伽攞陛娑嚩賀). The framing narrative gives Mañjuśrī as the speaker of the dhāraṇī in the assembly; the buddhas of the ten directions, the eight classes of beings, and the great assembly all praise him: “Excellent, excellent, Mañjuśrī, that out of compassion in the evil age, you reveal this inconceivable wish-fulfilling treasure of the Dharma.”

The body of the text consists of (i) a brief doctrinal frame placing the dhāraṇī in the karmic-rescue register (Mañjuśrī received it in a past Buddha-field and now transmits it), and (ii) the practical vidhi — the construction of an altar, the making of a homa fire-pit, the recitation cycles, and the visualization of Mañjuśrī as a single-topknot child-bodhisattva on a lotus-throne.

The “One-topknot Mañjuśrī” is one of the standard Tang-Esoteric morphological forms of the bodhisattva, alongside the Five-topknot (五髻 = pañca-cīra, the most familiar youthful Mañjuśrī), Six-syllable (KR6j0405), Eight-syllable (KR6j0409), and Five-syllable Mañjuśrīs — each form indexing a specific bīja-cycle and a specific clan of the maṇḍala. The dating bracket here (750–900) follows the late Tang Esoteric milieu in which such yíguǐ compilations were produced.
