Accomplishment-Ritual Sūtra of the Holy Krodha-Vajra-Kumāra Bodhisattva (alternate recension) by 不空 (Bùkōng, Amoghavajra, 譯)

About the work

A three-fascicle parallel recension of T1222a (KR6j0449), bearing the same title with the variant character (instead of ) for the second syllable of the deity-name, and a slightly abbreviated colophon: 唐三藏沙門大廣智不空譯. The Taishō header note for T1222a indicates that this T1222b is a 略儀軌 (abbreviated ritual manual) version: the alternate-character title in 【丙】 prints as 略儀軌, suggesting that this is the more compact of the two parallel renderings.

Abstract

The opening frame-narrative parallels T1222a closely: “Then Vajrapāṇi, having arisen from his seat, prostrated at the Buddha’s feet, withdrew to one side, joined his palms, and addressed the Buddha: ‘World-Honoured One, World-Honoured One, have compassion and uphold us. You have already expounded the Susiddhikara’s rules of mantra, observance, and method-teaching. I…‘”

The two recensions present the same essential content — the three-fascicle ritual manual on Krodha-Vajra-Kumāra with its mandala, mantra, mudrā, visualization, and homa programmes. The variations are largely orthographic (different graphs for the deity’s name), prosodic (different verse-line breaks), and editorial (some material expanded in one and abbreviated in the other), of the kind characteristic of parallel recensions retained in the imperial bureau because the variants were not perfectly reducible.

The dating bracket follows Amoghavajra’s translation activity at Cháng’ān (746–774).
