About the work

A one-fascicle Indian upadeśa on KR6j0590 Liùmén tuóluóní jīng (T1360), attributed to Vasubandhu (世親菩薩 Shìqīn púsà). The colophon — “世親菩薩造” — gives the author but no translator; the Taishō apparatus and the catalog tradition place the translation among the lost-translator Sòng renderings, plausibly produced at the Sòng Institute alongside the parallel dhāraṇī-translations of 施護 and 法賢. The CANWWW entry on T21N1361 follows this convention. The commentary is marked “附廣釋” (fù guǎngshì, “with extended exegesis”) on the title-leaf — i.e. it incorporates a vyākhyā layer.

Abstract

The treatise reads the “six gates” of KR6j0590 as a sequenced bodhisattva-cultivation programme, organised by Vasubandhu under three yìmén 異門 (“differential approaches”). Under the first approach the six are: completeness of wisdom (prajñā-paripūri), purification of the power of compassion, intrinsic purity, awareness of the obstructions caused by others, gathering all the bodhi-saṃbhāra, the resultant right-knowing-and-suchness. Under the second approach the six are: gathering beings in the time of suffering, gathering them in the time of pleasure, severing one’s own saṃbhāra-obstructions, severing those of others, accumulating all saṃbhāra, accumulating saṃbhāra for the self-fulfilment of others. Under the third approach the six are read as the inverse of the six causes of regression from samyak-saṃbodhi.

The treatise then turns to the cleansing of mind (pariśuddha-citta) under four heads, the four prayoga-purifications (purified preparation, the fruit of pure mind, the fruit of preparation, etc.), and ties the entire programme back to the pāramitās — the dhāraṇī as a kind of compressed pāramitā-practice. The commentary is a textbook example of Yogācāra upadeśa method, applying Vasubandhu’s standard analytical apparatus to a dhāraṇī-text rather than to a sūtra. Nanjio N0797.
