About the work
A short Táng-period translation by 實叉難陀 Śikṣānanda (652–710), preserved as the second recension of the work also represented by KR6j0599 (T1369a). The colophon here reads “唐于闐三藏實叉難陀譯” — the Táng/Khotanese form, suggesting that this version may post-date the formal end of the Wǔ-Zhōu period (705) or simply reflects a different colophon-tradition. The text is the same in substance but differs from KR6j0599 in transcription detail (e.g. bù-dì bù-dì bù-dì bù-dì vs. pú-tí pú-tí pú-tí pú-tí) and in some minor framing elements.
Abstract
The frame is the same as KR6j0599: Vulture-Peak with the bhikṣu-saṅgha and an immeasurable host of bodhisattvas; the dhāraṇī is to be received and held; before recitation one takes refuge in the Jīnsè guǎngyán guāngmíngzhuàng fó 金色廣顏光明幢佛 (“Golden-Form Broad-Visaged Light-Banner Buddha”, here corresponding to the slightly different miànmào guǎngdà dǐngchū zhēnjīn guāngmíngzhuàng form of KR6j0599) and in Śākyamuni. The triple-dhāraṇī structure (root-heart-following-heart) is preserved. The closing rubric — “the merit of one stūpa with this dhāraṇī inside is the same as the merit of a hundred-thousand stūpas” — is identical.
The pair KR6j0599/KR6j0600 is one of the rare cases where the Taishō preserves what are functionally two near-identical witnesses of one translation, distinguished principally by phonetic transcription convention. Their conjoint transmission illustrates Táng manuscript practice: the same translation could circulate in slightly divergent recensions through different copyist-traditions.
