A one-fascicle (1卷) prolegomenon (xuánshì 懸示, “preliminary indications”) to Dátiān Tōnglǐ 達天通理 通理’s ten-fascicle Lèngyán jīng zhǐzhǎng shū 楞嚴經指掌疏 (KR6j0716). Tōnglǐ identifies himself as Jīngdū Niānhuásì Xiánzōng hòuxué Dátiān Tōnglǐ jìngshù 京都拈華寺賢宗後學達天通理敬述 (“respectfully composed by Dátiān Tōnglǐ, junior disciple of the Xiánshǒu school at the Niānhuásì in the capital”), with editorial assistance from his Dharma-heirs 興宗祖旺 Xìngzōng Zǔwàng 興宗祖旺, 騰清懷仁 Téngqīng Huáirén 騰清懷仁, and 祖毓 Zǔyù 祖毓. Preserved as X16 no. 307 in the Xùzàngjīng.
Abstract
The Xuánshì lays out Tōnglǐ’s programmatic framework for reading the Śūraṃgama-sūtra, explicitly modeled on Qīngliáng Chéngguān 清涼澄觀 澄觀 (the Táng Huáyán patriarch). He divides the sūtra into four parts corresponding to the Sìzhǒngfēn 四種分 of the Huáyán-school: (1) Kāishì shēmó chéngxìn fēn 開示奢摩成信分 (“Opening-and-revealing of Śamatha: bringing forth Faith”), (2) Kāishì sānmó chéngjiě fēn 開示三摩成解分 (“…of Samādhi: bringing forth Understanding”), (3) Kāishì chánnà chéngxiū fēn 開示禪那成修分 (“…of Dhyāna: bringing forth Cultivation”), (4) Kāishì lèngyán chéngzhèng fēn 開示楞嚴成證分 (“…of Śūraṃgama: bringing forth Realization”). The Xuánshì surveys the major Tang-Sòng Lèngyán commentarial tradition — 圓照 Yuánzhào, 子璿 Chángshuǐ Zǐxuán, 無盡藏文殊 Wújìnzàng Wénshū — and explicitly differentiates Tōnglǐ’s reading from 交光真鑑 Jiāoguāng Zhēnjiàn 交光真鑑’s Zhèngmài shū (KR6j0703) — whose departures from Qīngliáng’s Huáyán jiāfǎ 家法 Tōnglǐ regards as unacceptable.
