About the work

A ten-fascicle (10卷) lay-Buddhist Chán commentary on the Śūraṃgama-sūtra (KR6j0118) by Zēng Fèngyí 曾鳳儀 曾鳳儀 ( Shùnzhēng 舜徵, sobriquet Jīnjiǎn 金簡; jìnshì 1583), the late-Wànlì lay-Buddhist scholar from Nányuè who in retirement composed a coordinated five-text Zōngtōng commentary set on the major Mahāyāna sūtras (Lèngyán, Lèngqié, Yuánjué, Jīngāng). Preserved as X16 no. 318 in the Xùzàngjīng. The work is paired conceptually with KR6i0347 / X17 no. 330 Lèngqié jīng zōngtōng and the Jīngāng zōngtōng / Jīngāng jīng jiēshì (KR6c0059 / KR6c0060).

Prefaces

The substantial Lèngyán zōngtōng yuánqǐ 楞嚴宗通緣起 (“Origins of the Lèngyán Zōngtōng”) opens the work, signed Nányuè shānzhǎng Jīnjiǎn Zēng Fèngyí Shùnzhēng fù tí 南嶽山長金簡曾鳳儀舜徵父題 (“Mountain-warden of Nányuè, Jīnjiǎn Zēng Fèngyí Shùnzhēng, Father, inscribed”). Zēng narrates the famous tradition that Tiāntái Zhìyǐ 智顗 智顗 — having attained the Fǎhuá sānmèi 法華三昧 under his teacher Nányuè 慧思 Huìsī — was told by an Indian monk that the Śūraṃgama-sūtra “manifestly reveals the merits of the six sense-faculties, and is enough to corroborate (your insight)”; Zhìyǐ thereafter “morning and evening for sixteen years bowed westward” (each day) hoping for the sūtra’s arrival, but died without seeing it. The “Bàijīng tái” 拜經臺 (Sūtra-bowing Platform) at Nányuè preserves his memory. Zēng records that he himself thrice visited the Bàijīng tái and, moved by the contrast — Zhìyǐ “longed for sixteen years and never saw it; today the Lèngyán fills the bookstalls but is set aside and ignored” — vowed to have the sūtra carved into stone for installation around the Bàijīng tái. While transcribing, he reflected that “what I am writing is letters, not the meaning”; whereupon he resolved to compose the present commentary, drawing not from the standard yìxué 義學 commentarial tradition but from the Chán-school recorded sayings (zōngyǔ 宗語) of 馬祖 Mǎzǔ, 百丈 Bǎizhàng, 師備 Xuánshā, 子璿 Chángshuǐ, 可觀 Zhúān, 慧南 Huánglóng, and others — taking each Chán-school saying that “secretly aligns with” the sūtra-text and arranging them as commentary. Hence the title Zōngtōng — “penetrating (the sūtra) through the (Chán-school’s) cardinal lineage.”

Abstract

The Zōngtōng is the principal lay-Buddhist Chán commentary on the Lèngyán of the late Wànlì period: it programmatically substitutes the Chán-school gōngàn 公案 record for the conventional yìxué commentary, thus presenting the sūtra not as an object of philological-doctrinal exposition but as a zōngyǔ 宗語 itself, internally illuminated by the matched sayings of the Chán masters. Zēng explicitly contrasts his method with the proliferation of jùshì 句釋 (“phrase-explanation”) commentaries: “as glosses pile up, the sūtra’s sense recedes.” Composition window: late-Wànlì (post-1599 retirement) – 1620 (the upper bound of Wànlì); Zēng was over eighty suì in old age but precise lifedates are unrecorded, so this remains the defensible bracket.

The Zōngtōng is one of four cognate Zōngtōng commentaries Zēng Fèngyí produced in retirement; together they constitute the most ambitious lay-Buddhist Chán commentarial project of the late Míng. The five-text set is also institutionally significant for Zēng’s regional base at Nányuè 南嶽, where his Jíxián Shūyuàn 集賢書院 academy provided the institutional foundation for syncretic Confucian-Buddhist study.
