Mǎzǔ 馬祖

Tang-period Chán master Mǎzǔ Dàoyī 馬祖道一 (709–788), the principal heir of Nányuè Huáiràng 南嶽懷讓 and founder of the Hóngzhōu 洪州 line whose recorded sayings (yǔlù 語錄) became canonical in the Chán-school commentarial tradition.
