The Mūlasarvāstivāda-Vinaya-Saṃgraha by 勝友 (Viśākha, 集) and 義淨 (Yìjìng, 譯)

About the work

A fourteen-fascicle Chinese rendering of the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya-saṃgraha — a systematic compendium / digest of the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, organised under doctrinal-procedural headings. Compiled by the Indian vinayācārya Viśākha 勝友 (勝友) in the late-Indian period (probably 6th–7th c.), and translated by Yìjìng (義淨) in the early 8th century.

Prefaces

Translator’s colophon: 尊者勝友造 / 大唐三藏義淨奉制譯. The compiler’s name is given in its Chinese-translation form 勝友 (“Good Friend”); the same Sanskrit name Viśākha appears transliterated as 毘舍佉 in the catalog meta for KR6k0040 — these refer to the same person.

Abstract

The Vinaya-saṃgraha genre — systematic-categorical digests of the rule-content of a parent Vinaya, organised under abhidharmic topical headings rather than the canonical vibhaṅga / skandhaka sequence — is a late-Indian development paralleling the Abhidharma-saṃgraha literature. Viśākha’s compendium presents the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya in a non-narrative, taxonomic format that facilitates rapid reference and pedagogical use. The text is one of the most important Indian-authored exegetical works on the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya and a key witness for Indian vinaya scholasticism in the 6th–7th centuries.
