The Essentials of Vinaya: Glosses on Affairs and Meanings by 德基 (Déjī, 輯)
About the work
A single-fascicle glossary that serves as the lexical and historical companion to Dìngān Déjī’s (德基, 1634–1700/01) sixteen-juan Píní guānyào (KR6k0152). Editorial signature: 清金陵寶華山律學沙門 德基 輯 (Compiled by Déjī, Vinaya monk of Bǎohuáshān at Jīnlíng of the Qīng). The work proceeds entry by entry through the names, places, dynasties, and technical terms cited in the Guānyào and supplies short philological and historical glosses.
Prefaces
No separate preface in the source; the work serves as a companion glossary to KR6k0152 and shares its preface and editorial framing.
Abstract
The Shìyì is a working glossary written for the early-Qīng Bǎohuáshān curriculum. The opening entries gloss the dynastic names cited at the head of Sìfēnlǜ translations (Yáo Qín 姚秦, Yíng Qín 嬴秦, Qǐfú Qín 乞伏秦, Fú Qín 符秦), distinguishing them historically and identifying the geographical referents (Jīnchéng 金城 = Líntáo Prefecture in Shǎnxī; Yuànchuān 苑川 = Bǎojī county in Fèngxiáng, Shǎnxī, etc.). It then proceeds to the wǔmíng 五明 (the five Indian sciences — śabda, hetu, cikitsā, śilpa, adhyātma) and the doctrinal vocabulary of the prātimokṣa. As a working monastic-school glossary, the Shìyì is invaluable for reconstructing the standard pedagogical handling of Sìfēn terminology in the late-seventeenth-century Vinaya school. Composition is contemporary with KR6k0152 (between 1679 and 1700/01).
