Prefaces
The work itself is the gloss on the preface; no separate front-matter.
Abstract
The Xùjiě takes Dàoxuān’s prefatorial twenty-five characters and the zhuànzhùrénhào 撰注人號 (the line identifying the author and his location) and supplies short philological glosses on each phrase: explanations of Jīngzhào 京兆 (the Tang metropolitan administrative unit, from jīng “great” and zhào “multitude”), Chóngyìsì 崇義寺 (the temple’s name as derived from a marriage-bequest transformation), shāmén 沙門 (Skt. śramaṇa, “the diligent stiller of the passions”), shì 釋 (Skt. Śākya, the surname adopted by all ordained monks), and Dàoxuān 道宣 with his fǎbiàn 法徧. The work is short but documentarily valuable: it preserves the immediate-post-Yuánzhào pedagogical tradition of the Língzhīsì 靈芝寺 Nánshānlǜ school. It must postdate Yuánzhào’s death (1116) — Zéān refers to Yuánzhào with the posthumous title Dàzhì lǜshī 大智律師 in his other works — but precise dating within the early twelfth century is not possible; the bracket here gives Zéān’s likely active period.
