Nánshān zǔshī lǐzàn wén 南山祖師禮讚文
A Hymnody of Veneration for the Patriarch-Master of the Nánshān (Vinaya) School by 智圓 (Zhìyuán, 述)
About the work
A single-fascicle Northern-Sòng lǐzàn wén 禮讚文 (worship-and-eulogy liturgy) for the death-anniversary of Nánshān Dàoxuān 南山道宣 (596–667), the Chéngzhào Dàshī 澄照大師, founder of the Sìfēnlǜ Nánshān 四分律南山 (Four-Part Vinaya) school. Composed by Gūshān Zhìyuán 孤山智圓 (智圓, 976–1022), the leader of the Shānwài 山外 wing of Sòng Tiāntái. The author signature reads Gūshān shāmén shì Zhìyuán shù 孤山沙門釋 智圓 述. The work opens the trio of Sòng Nánshān zǔshī lǐzàn wén preserved as X1504–1506 (= KR6k0207, KR6k0208, KR6k0209); these three were brought together as a unit and prefaced (元符三年 = 1100) by Yúháng Yuánzhào 餘杭元照 (元照, 1048–1116), the Língzhī Dàzhì lǜshī 靈芝大智律師.
Prefaces
The 1100 Jí Nánshān lǐzàn xù 集南山禮讚序 by Yuánzhào (preserved at the head of the present X1504) reports the genesis: the Gūshān fǎshī (Zhìyuán) “first took up the brush, [his work] requested by Lǜshī of Dōushuài Zéwú 兜率擇梧” (Dōushuài Zéwú); next, the Zháxī fǎshī (i.e. Jìngjué Rényuè 淨覺仁岳) added a metrical version because Zhìyuán’s lacked liturgical melody; and the Tiāntái Zhēnwù lǜshī (i.e. Yǔnkǎn 允堪) combined and reextended the two. Yuánzhào himself collated the three for liturgical use across the standard three-day huìrì 諱日 (death-anniversary) cycle.
Abstract
Zhìyuán’s Nánshān zǔshī lǐzàn wén is the earliest Sòng zànyí for the founder of the Nánshān Vinaya school, written between his entry into mature literary activity (ca. 1000) and his death in 1022, in response to a request from a lǜshī at Dōushuàiyuàn in Mt Zéwú. The text follows the standard zànyí structure: an opening yīxīn fèngqǐng 一心奉請 (onemind invocation) of the master, prostrations, zàncí 讚詞 (eulogy stanzas) walking through the fourfold scheme of Dàoxuān’s biographical episodes (Rìyán jīngshè 日嚴精舍, transmission of the vinaya, the heavenly responses, the deathbed fùfǎ 付法), and closing offerings. The prose preface (by Zhìyuán himself) contains the formula Nánshān jiàozhǔ Chéngzhào Dàshī lìshì lìyán dàchǎn píní zhī xué 南山教主澄照大師立事立言大闡毗尼之學 — “the master of the Nánshān, the Great Master Chéngzhào, who both established the deeds and established the words, greatly explicating the study of vinaya.” Composition is bracketed by Zhìyuán’s mature career at Gūshān on West Lake; notBefore–notAfter are set 1000–1022. For the parallel later zànyí see KR6k0208 (by Rényuè) and KR6k0209 (by Yǔnkǎn).

Other points of interest
- One of three Nánshān zǔshī lǐzàn wén (with KR6k0208 and KR6k0209) collected by Yuánzhào ca. 1100 and transmitted as a unit; only the Xùzàngjīng preserves them as separate numbered texts.
