Convergence at the Source of the Vinaya School by 守一 (Shǒuyī, 集)

About the work

A three-fascicle Southern-Sòng anthology by Tiěwēng Shǒuyī (守一) at Tāizhōu Rìshān, organising the Nánshānlǜ tradition under ten doctrinal gates (shímén 十門) with subsection gloss. Companion to KR6k0219 Zhōngnán jiāyè. The full title given in the source-text is Lǜzōng huìyuán (bìng shímén zǒngmù suímén lüèshì) juǎn dìyī (zhǐ Yuánjiào zhōng) 律宗會元(并十門總目隨門略釋)卷第一(止原教終). Structural Division

The ten gates are signalled in the shímén zǒngmù embedded in the work:

  1. Yuánjiào mén 原教門 (origin of the [vinaya] teaching);
  2. Guānfǎ mén 觀法門 (contemplation-method gate);
  3. (continuing) Shòujiè mén 受戒門, Chífàn mén 持犯門, Yīshí mén 衣食門, Sēngjiā mén 僧伽門, Yúfǎ mén 餘法門, Zhèngyán mén 證驗門, Yǐnshēng mén 引申門 — and a closing miscellany gate. (Each gate carries Shǒuyī’s suímén lüèshì 隨門略釋, “sectionbysection brief gloss”.)

Abstract

The Lǜzōng huìyuán organises the textual heritage of the Nánshān Vinaya school as a topical anthology, drawing canonical and subcanonical citations into a huìyuán 會元 (“gathering-at-the-source”) framework. The opening Yuánjiào mén makes the work’s principal doctrinal claim: while the vinayapiṭaka nominally belongs to the Hīnayāna division of the tripiṭaka, *“the Lotus Sūtra opens-and-converges (kāi huì 開會) and the Nièpán Sūtra sustains-and-discusses (fútán 扶談), so that the partial is identical to the round (zhǐ piān jí yuán 指偏即圓)” — i.e. the Nánshān reading places Vinaya within the Mahāyāna onevehicle (yī Fó chéng 一佛乘) doctrinally as well as ritually. This is the standard Língzhī + Tiāntái fusion. The second gate Guānfǎ mén makes the corresponding methodological claim: Vinaya requires contemplation (xí lǜ zhī xū guān 習律之須觀), since the Buddha himself in the vinayavibhaṅga enjoins the bhikṣu to “uphold dignity in postures, in robes, medicines and food, in word and gesture, in rest and movement, ever with one mind.” Composition is bracketed by Shǒuyī’s residence at Rìshān (from 1239); notBeforenotAfter are accordingly set 1239–1260.

Other points of interest

  • The huìyuán (gathering-at-the-source) format is a Southern-Sòng pedagogical genre, distinct from the xíngshìchāo 行事鈔 / zīchí jì 資持記 commentary tradition; this work is an important example.
