About the work

A single-fascicle late-Míng vinaya anthology by Ǒuyì Zhìxù (智旭, 1599–1655), conceived as a supplement (hòují 後集 “later collection”) to his earlier Zàijiā lǜyào (now preserved in the expanded form KR6k0243 Zàijiā lǜyào guǎngjí) and his Píní hòují wènbiàn 毗尼後集問辯.

Structural Division

The internal mùcì gives the work’s contents:

1. Sòng huò běn 誦或本 — note: “taken from the Dìchí jièpǐn in the Púsàjiè běnjīng; therefore here omitted” (i.e. the user is referred to the canonical source).
2. Púsàjiè jiémó wén shì 菩薩戒羯磨文釋 — a doctrinal-procedural commentary on the karmavācanā of the bodhisattva-precept conferral (preserved in fascicle 61 of the Xùzàngjīng).
3. Chóngdìng shòu púsàjiè fǎ 重定授菩薩戒法 — Zhìxù’s revised procedure for the conferral of the bodhisattva precepts.
4. Xué púsàjiè fǎ 學菩薩戒法 — the practitioner’s protocol for studying the bodhisattva precepts.
5. Fànwǎng jīng chànhuǐ xíngfǎ 梵網經懺悔行法 — note: “found in the Zàijiā lǜyào guǎngjí; therefore here omitted.” (Cf. KR6k0245, where this is also separately preserved.)
6. Píní hòují wènbiàn 毗尼後集問辯 — Zhìxù’s vinaya question-and-disputation collection.

Abstract

The Lǜyào hòují gathers Zhìxù’s late-stage ritual-and-question productions in Vinaya. The core item is Chóngdìng shòu púsàjiè fǎ — Zhìxù’s revised procedure for bodhisattva-precept conferral, in which the candidate first formally invokes the bodhisattva-master, prostrates to the past-and-future Buddhas of the four directions and the Three Jewels, recites the guǎngyuàn 廣願 (great vows), and finally receives the sānjù jìngjiè 三聚淨戒 (three pure precepts: zhēngfó 證佛, shànfǎ 善法, shèzhòngshēng 攝眾生). The procedure is independently designed (it does not follow Zhūhóng’s Púsàjièyì shū fāyǐn 菩薩戒義疏發隱) and supplied a benchmark for subsequent late-Míng / Qīng bodhisattva-precept conferrals. Composition is bracketed by Zhìxù’s mature commentarial period and his death in 1655; notBefore–notAfter are 1620–1655.
