Dàshèng fǎjiè wú chābié lùn 大乘法界無差別論

Mahāyāna Treatise on the Non-Differentiation of the Dharmadhātu (alternate recension) by 堅慧菩薩 (Jiānhuì púsà = Sāramati, 造) and 提雲般若 (Tíyúnbōrě = Devaprajñā, 譯)

About the work

A second, slightly differing single-fascicle Chinese version of the Mahāyānadharmadhātu-aviśeṣa-śāstra attributed to 堅慧菩薩 (Sāramati). Both this version and KR6n0089 (T31n1626) are attributed to the same translator, 提雲般若 (Devaprajñā), suggesting either a revision in the same translation circle or a parallel transmission of two distinct recensions of the Indian text. Preserved in the Taishō (T31n1627), with limited edition support (only 【大】and 【大→明】 in the catalog).

Structural Division

CANWWW does not preserve a structural division for T31N1627. The recension differs from T31n1626 in textual details but covers the same twelve-aspect treatment of bodhicitta and the doctrine of the non-differentiated dharmadhātu.

Abstract

The relationship between this text and KR6n0089 is a long-standing scholarly puzzle. The two translations are by the same translator (or his circle), of (apparently) the same Indian text, but differ in textual particulars. Possibilities include: (a) two distinct Chinese renderings of the same Indian text, perhaps separated by some short period; (b) two Chinese renderings of two distinct Indian recensions; (c) one a revision of the other. The catalog dating window adopted (690–691) follows the bracket for the parent text KR6n0089, on the assumption that both translations belong to the same cluster of Devaprajñā activity.

The text is doctrinally identical in substance to KR6n0089 and is treated together with that text in the Hua-yan-school commentarial tradition. 法藏’s commentary KR6n0091 is on the better-attested recension T31n1626. The minor variant T31n1627 is rarely cited independently.
