Jìngtǔ suí xué 淨土隨學
Pure Land Studies, Followed Wherever One May Be by 古崑 (Gǔkūn lǎorén, 編)
About the work
A two-juǎn Pure Land devotional anthology compiled (biān 編) by the late-Qīng Hangzhou-area monk 古崑 Gǔkūn lǎorén 古崑老人 during the Tóngzhì 同治 / Guāngxù 光緒 reigns. The title — suí xué 隨學 (“studies pursued wherever one happens to be”) — frames the work as a portable handbook for itinerant or busy practitioners, designed to support the practice of niànfó under any external circumstances.
Abstract
The opening tící 題詞 (titular verse-encomium) summarises the editorial conception: Pópó 娑婆 (this Sahā-world) is a sea of suffering; the Buddha’s xīfāng gate is the unique compassionate deliverance; the Lúshān tradition of 慧遠 Huìyuǎn’s Báiliánshè 白蓮社 is the source of the Chinese Pure Land lineage; the present zhèngfǎ decline (língyí 陵夷) has produced widespread confusion that mistakes wéixīn jìngtǔ 唯心淨土 (“Pure Land as mind-only”) for an annulment of the Western xīfāng tǔ — and Gǔkūn’s anthology is offered as a fǎyào 法藥 (dharma-medicine) directed precisely at that confusion. The title verse explicitly cross-references the Jìngtǔ shénzhū 淨土神珠 KR6p0117 as Gǔkūn’s prior compilation in the same series.
The body of the anthology comprises substantial extracts from the standard Pure Land patristic and pastoral literature, organised thematically rather than chronologically: doctrinal extracts from the Jìngtǔ sānjīng 淨土三經 corpus, Tiāntái Zhìyǐ 智顗’s Shíyí lùn, the Yúnqī Zhūhóng 袾宏 / Ǒuyì Zhìxù late-Míng Pure Land tradition, the Chèwù 徹悟 / Péng Jìqīng 彭際清 late-Qīng synthesis, and devotional verse. The work is one of the four short Gǔkūn anthologies preserved in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 — alongside Jìngtǔ bìqiú KR6p0107 (X1188), Liánzōng bìdú KR6p0116 (X1197), and Jìngtǔ shénzhū KR6p0117 (X1198) — and shares with them the lay-pastoral, Hangzhou-regional register of late-Qīng popular Pure Land devotional scholarship.
The dating bracket adopted (1860–1890) covers Gǔkūn’s principal active period.
