Preserved Drafts of the Continuing Lamp
edited (編定) by 通問 (Tōngwèn); compiled (彙集) by 施沛 (Shī Pèi), late Míng
About the work
A 12-juan late-Míng Chán lamp-record continuation, assembled by the lay editor Shī Pèi and given its final editorial form by the monk Tōngwèn. Title — “Preserved Drafts of the Continuing Lamp” — modestly signals its provisional character: it aims to save useful material rather than to produce a definitive continuation.
Abstract
The work is one of several competing late-Míng continuations of the Wǔdēng huìyuán (KR6q0012) and Xù chuándēng lù (KR6q0016) traditions. The collaboration of a literatus (Shī Pèi) as principal compiler with a monastic editor (Tōngwèn) is characteristic of the late-Míng lay-monastic Chán ecosystem. Circulation remained limited; the work was preserved in the Jiāxīng canon.
Translations and research
No English translation. No dedicated monograph.
Other points of interest
The compilation’s modest title and lay-led editorial structure contrasts instructively with the polemically-titled contemporary works of Fèiyǐn Tōngróng (KR6q0019).
