Xù chuándēng lù 續傳燈錄

Continued Record of the Transmission of the Lamp

anonymous early-Míng continuation of the Jǐngdé chuándēng lù 景德傳燈錄 (KR6q0003), presented to the Yǒnglè 永樂 court ca. 1401–1402

About the work

A 36-juan continuation of the Jǐngdé chuándēng lù covering Chán masters from the early eleventh century down to the mid-fourteenth, compiled anonymously in the very early Míng and included in the Nánzàng 南藏 and subsequent canonical collections. Traditional secondary attribution to the Míng monk 居頂 Jūdǐng (d. 1404) is found in later catalogues but is not securely established in contemporary sources.

Abstract

Structurally a direct continuation of the Jǐngdé format, covering the Sòng, Jīn, and Yuán periods. The coverage of the later Sòng overlaps extensively with the Liándēng huìyào 聯燈會要 (KR6q0008) and Jiātài pǔdēng lù 嘉泰普燈錄 (KR6q0010), which the Xù chuándēng lù silently incorporates; but it also treats the Yuán-era Línjì and Cáodòng masters who fell outside those earlier Sòng-era compilations.

The work entered the official canon through the 南藏 (Nánzàng) printed under the Míng Hóngwǔ emperor and was incorporated into the standard Chán canonical section of all subsequent canonical editions. Its anonymous character and its compositive editorial method (heavily drawing on earlier lamp records) reduce its independent source-value compared to the individual Sòng lamp records, but for Yuán-era Chán figures it is often the earliest available source.

Translations and research

No English translation. No dedicated monograph; the work is discussed in surveys of Chán lamp-record historiography as the principal early-Míng continuation of the Jǐngdé tradition.

Other points of interest

The attribution to 居頂 Jūdǐng, while widely repeated in later Míng and Qīng bibliographies, remains disputed; contemporary Yǒnglè-era sources do not name a compiler.
