Sayings-Record of Chán Master Bǎizhàng Huáihǎi — the yǔlù of Bǎizhàng Huáihǎi 百丈懷海 (720–814), the pivotal Táng Chán master credited with establishing formal Chán monastic regulation (Bǎizhàng qīngguī 百丈清規). Constitutes juan 2 of the Sìjiā yǔlù. Dharma-heir of Mǎzǔ Dàoyī KR6q0267; teacher of Huángbò Xīyùn 黃檗希運 and of Guīshān Língyòu 溈山靈祐 (whence the Guī-Yǎng-school).

Bǎizhàng’s teachings preserved here address both doctrinal-experiential awakening and monastic-disciplinary organisation. The classical formulation attributed to Bǎizhàng — “a day without work, a day without eating” (yī rì bù zuò, yī rì bù shí 一日不作一日不食) — encapsulates his institutional legacy of the self-supporting Chán monastery.
