About the work
A one-juan Táng-era Chán yǔlù, X69 n1321. Non-commentary; commentedTextid omitted.
The text preserves Mǎzǔ’s teachings — the Hóngzhōu-school’s characteristic emphasis on píngcháng xīn 平常心 (“ordinary mind”) as the Buddha-nature, and the direct-expression pedagogical methods that shaped subsequent classical Chán teaching styles.
Mǎzǔ Dàoyī 馬祖道一 (709–788): the seminal master of Hóngzhōu Chán; dharma-heir of Nányuè Huáiràng 南嶽懷讓 (disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huìnéng). Principal teacher of Bǎizhàng Huáihǎi 百丈懷海 (see KR6q0268–KR6q0269). Through his many dharma-heirs, Mǎzǔ’s line became the dominant lineage of mature Chán development across the Táng-Sòng transition.
Dating: notBefore 780 (Mǎzǔ’s late teaching years); notAfter c. 900 (compilation into the Sìjiā yǔlù by the late Táng).
