Pǔguāng Tǎnān chánshī yǔlù 普光坦菴禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Pǔ-guāng Tǎn-ān by 機峻 (說), 全弘 (錄), 羅開麟 (序)

About the work

Single-juan yǔlù of Tǎnān Jījùn 機峻 坦菴機峻, 32nd-generation Línjì dharma-heir of Píngshān Cìān Zhēnběn 真本 瓶山次菴真本 (= 項謙, the Gǔpíngshān 古瓶山 Mùdàozhě 牧道者) at his Pǔguāngsì 普光寺 abbacy in Yǒngfēng 永豐 (Jiāxīng prefecture) from 1670/5/19. Compiled by shìzhě attendant Quánhóng 全弘. Front-matter: (i) preface by Kōngzhū Luó Zhēnxìng 空諸羅真性, dated 康熙庚戌孟秋丙辰 = 1670/8/15 Gregorian (the catalog meta credits a separate Luó Kāilín 羅開麟 — possibly a parallel signature, see below); (ii) three qǐngqǐ 請啟 invitation-memorials by lay-disciple groups: (a) Jiāxīng zhūxiāngshēn qǐngqǐ (22 named patrons including 張天植 and 曹溶); (b) zhòng wénxué qǐngqǐ (29 named patrons including 施博 Shī Bó and Luó Kāilín); (c) Pǔguāng qǐngqǐ. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J29 B247.

Abstract

Dating. notBefore / notAfter = 1670. The first dated event is 康熙庚戌 5/19 = 1670/6/27 Gregorian when Jījùn received the lay-patron invitation at Jīngyánsì 精嚴寺. Formal entry to Pǔguāngsì on 6/6 = 1670/7/13. The Luó Zhēnxìng front-preface is dated 1670/8/15; the volume was therefore cut within the calendar year of the abbacy-installation. The compact one-juan extent reflects that the yǔlù records only the opening months of Jījùn’s Pǔguāng tenure.

Lineage. The juan-1 entry-sermon’s incense-offering verse names Línjì zhèngchuán sānshíèr shì Píngshāntáng shàng Cìān běnshī lǎorén 臨濟正傳三十二世瓶山堂上次菴本師老人 — confirming Jījùn’s status as a 32nd-generation Línjì heir of Cìān Zhēnběn at Píngshān, in the Hǔqiū → Wúzhǔn Shīfàn → Duànqiáo Mìaolún → Jìngshān Chōng → Xìngshàn Guǎng → Pǔmíng Yòng → Jīnmíng Jièlǎo → Píngshān Cìān sub-line. The Luó Zhēnxìng preface confirms this transmission as zuìhòu zhì Píngshān ménxià, shuǐrǔ xiāngtóu, suì shòu jìbié 最後至瓶山門下水乳相投遂受記莂 — i.e., that Jījùn had consulted multiple teachers before receiving formal certification at Píngshān.

Background. Per the zhūxiāngshēn invitation: native of Jīnlíng 金陵 (Nánjīng) — Jīnlíng yùxiù, Zhōngfù chéngxiáng 金陵毓秀鍾阜呈祥. Per the Pǔguāng invitation: previously preached in Hǎimǐn 海閩 / Zhāngnán 漳南 — i.e., the Fújiàn coastal region, with abbacies near Cānglóngjī 蒼龍磯 (in Zhāngzhōu prefecture). The Jiāxīng invitation thus represents an eastward / northward migration from the Fújiàn ministry to a Hǔ-qiū-school heartland in Zhèjiāng.

Lay-patron rosters. The three invitation-memorials together name about sixty Jiāxīng lay-Chán patrons, including: Zhāng Tiānzhí 張天植, Cáo Róng 曹溶, Wáng Tíng 王庭, Zhū Màoshí 朱茂時 (in the xiāngshēn roster), and 施博 Shī Bó (the same preface-writer of KR6q0432 / KR6q0433 / KR6q0443 / KR6q0444 — confirming Shī Bó’s continued lay-Chán activity in 1670 Jiāxīng). The Luó Kāilín / 羅開驎 of the zhòng wénxué roster is presumably the author credited in the catalog meta.

Catalog-vs-source tension. Catalog meta gives 羅開麟 as preface-writer (序); the surviving signed preface in the source-text is by Luó Zhēnxìng. Both share the surname Luó 羅 and may belong to a single Jiāxīng Luó family-circle of lay-disciples; Luó Kāilín is one named signer of the zhòng wénxué invitation, suggesting a kinsman-of-the-preface-writer rather than the preface-writer himself.

Tiyao

Not applicable — Jiā-xīng-canon imprint (J29 B247). The Luó Zhēnxìng preface, the three qǐngqǐ invitation-memorials with their lay-patron rosters, and the entry-sermon dating-notice provide the principal documentation.

Translations and research

  • No substantial secondary literature located. For the broader Hǔ-qiū-school context see the KR6q0455 entry on Tuì-ān Duàn-yú Zhì (a contemporary in a parallel sub-line of the same Pǔ-míng-Yòng descent).

Other points of interest

  • Píngshān Zhēnběn lineage extension. Where KR6q0202 preserves Zhēnběn’s own Mùdàozhě sermons and KR6q0455 preserves a parallel PǔmíngYòng heir’s yǔlù, this volume is the documentary witness to Zhēnběn as transmission-grandfather to the next -generation through Jījùn at Pǔguāng. It is, with KR6q0455, the second of two extant -generation works in the Hǔqiū → PǔmíngYòng line preserved in the Jiāxīng Canon.
  • Sixty-patron Jiāxīng lay roster. The combined qǐngqǐ signatures preserve a uniquely detailed snapshot of the 1670 Jiāxīng lay-Chán patronage network, including senior officials (Zhāng Tiānzhí, Cáo Róng), local xiāngshēn, and the published-author lay disciple 施博 Shī Bó in his Jiāxīng activity post-dating his earlier Cáo-dòng-line preface-work.
