Fifteen-juan yǔlù of Yúnwài Xíngzé 行澤 雲外行澤 (1607-09-21 – 1654/55), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Yìnzhōng / Sōngjì Tōngshòu 印中通授 / 松際通授 at Qìngshān 磬山 (the Línjì sub-line of Tiānyǐn Yuánxiū 天隱圓修, the master of 圓信 雪嶠圓信 and the broader Qìngshān sub-school). Compiled by cānxué ménrén Hóngfú 宏怤 děng (= the tóngcān xiōngdì Xīngmèi chánshī 惺寐禪師 of the Wáng Guāngchéng preface). Two prefaces preserved: (i) by Wáng Guāngchéng Pántán 王光承槃談 of Yúnjiān 雲間 (Sōngjiāng) dated 康熙十一年孟春 = 1672 spring; (ii) the earlier original preface by Míng-loyalist scholar Jīn Zhèngxī 金正希 (Jīn Shēng 金聲, 1598–1645) — published before Jīn’s 1645 anti-Qīng martyrdom, hence an exceptional preserved fragment of a martyred Míng-loyalist’s lay-Chán writing. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J33 B280; also circulated as appended to the Léngyán fāngcè zàng 楞嚴方冊藏 (per DILA A019555).
Abstract
Authorship. Per 行澤 note: native of Wùyuán 婺源 (Huīzhōu); lay surname Wāng 汪; lay-name Yìnglín 應麟. Tonsured at 25 at Huángshān; visited Mìyún Yuánwù at Tiāntóng on the way to formal precepts; transmission from Tōngshòu at Qìngshān on the fēngdòng liánmù incident. Three abbacies: Kuānglú Wǔrǔfēng 匡廬五乳峰 (post-transmission, qǐngzuò with yīngluòzhōu 瓔珞粥 austerity), Qízhōu Lǎozǔsì 蘄州老祖寺, and Xiāngyīn Shéndǐngsì 湘陰神鼎寺 (the seat from which his Hāo Shéndǐng derives). Died 順治甲午 = 1654 (10/X) – 1655 (1/X) with the verse shìfēi hǎi nèi zhǎn quánjī 是非海內展全機; full-body stūpa at Shéndǐng Zīfúsì.
Dating. notBefore = c. 1640 (post-transmission preaching). notAfter = 1672 (Wáng Guāngchéng preface). The actual master died c. 1654, so speaker-side dates are 1640–1654; the transmitted volume reflects the c. 1672 publication consolidation by Hóngfú 宏怤 / Xīngmèi. Wáng’s preface emphasizes that the master had been dead 16 years (1654 + 16 ≈ 1670) when Hóngfú/Xīngmèi assembled the quánzhì 全帙 (complete recension).
Lineage and heirs. Yángqí line via Tiānyǐn Yuánxiū 天隱圓修 → Tōngshòu → Yúnwài Xíngzé. Although Tōngshòu reportedly transmitted only to Xíngzé (yángshān bù wàng jìbié, shēngpíng duànliàn wéi shī yī rén 陽山不妄記莂生平煆煉惟師一人, per Wáng preface) — making Xíngzé the sole heir — Xíngzé himself transmitted to no one (shī dé fǎ shíbā nián, méntú cānqǐng cháng qiānshù, ér zhōngshēn wú suǒ fùzhǔ 師得法十八年門徒參請嘗千數而終身無所付囑). Per DILA, his ménrén (without formal fùfǎ) include Hóngfú, Shēnjí 深極, Shēnzhī 深知, Shēnhào 深皜.

Other points of interest
- Jīn Zhèngxī (Jīn Shēng) preface. The preserved earlier preface by Jīn Shēng 金聲 (1598–1645), a Tángzhōu jìnshì and Hóng-guāng-court loyalist who refused to surrender to the Qīng and was executed in 1645 at Húzhōu, is an exceptional pre-Qīng-conquest preface preserved into the post-1670 publication. The mid-1640s composition of Jīn’s preface implies the Yúnwài yǔlù had reached at least preliminary publication during Xíngzé’s lifetime, before Hóngfú’s full quánzhì edition was compiled c. 1670–72.
- No-transmission record. Despite an active 18-year preaching career and reported thousands of consultants, Xíngzé refused to transmit dharma to anyone. The 15-juan corpus thus represents one of the rare detailed yǔlù of a major Línjì-line teacher who deliberately closed his sub-line at his own death — a counterpoint to the fertile multi-heir Sìchuān Pòshān-line.
