Abstract
Authorship. Per the 洪暹 note: dharma-heir of Zìxián Xíngjué of the Mìyún → Línyě line; lead compiler of his master’s yǔlù KR6q0469. Hóngxiān’s own seat was at Fényáng 汾陽 (Shǎnxī / Shānxī) — significant for being the historic seat of Fényáng Shànzhāo 汾陽善昭 (947–1024), the founder of gōngàn literature. The Hú Shìān preface explicitly invokes this Fényáng pedigree: Hānyú héshàng zhuōxí Fényáng, jiànchuí shīkū, chàngtí zhíqiē, jiē rìyuè dēng yú zhōngtiān, yìnzhèng dòngxuán 憨予和尚卓錫汾陽鍵椎獅窟唱提直切揭日月燈於中天印證洞玄.
Dating. notBefore = c. 1655 (conservative bound for Hóngxiān’s first abbacy, the seat predating the 1659 publication). notAfter = 1659 (Hú Shìān preface). Hóngxiān’s master Xíngjué was still alive at this point (until 1662), making this a yǔlù published while the master was still active — uncommon and signaling an exceptional lay-patronage commitment to printing the disciple’s work.
Hú Shìān as preface-writer. Hú Shìān (1593–1663), the early-Qīng Wǔyīngdiàn grand secretary and a senior survivor of MíngQīng transition officialdom, was a Western-Sì-chuān native (西蜀). His preface here, dated 1659/9, falls in his late-life period (he died 1663). The HúHóngxiān connection likely derives from shared Sìchuān provenance: Hóngxiān’s master Xíngjué was a Sìchuān 合州 native, and Hú himself was 西蜀.
Lineage. Mìyún Yuánwù → Línyě Tōngqí → Zìxián Xíngjué → Hānyú Hóngxiān — a one-to-one Sì-chuān-line transmission within the broader Mìyún 32nd-generation Línjì.
Tiyao
Not applicable — Jiā-xīng-canon imprint (J33 B288). The Hú Shìān preface provides the principal documentation.
Translations and research
- See KR6q0469 for the broader Lín-yě → Zì-xián → Hān-yú line.
Other points of interest
- Pre-master publication. The 1659 publication date precedes the master Xíngjué’s 1662 death — making this an unusual case of a disciple’s yǔlù printed while the master was still active in ministry. Suggests strong lay-patronage initiative (likely Hú Shìān’s own circle in West Sìchuān).
- Fén-yáng-line claim. The Fényáng abbacy positions Hóngxiān’s preaching in deliberate continuity with the Fényáng Shànzhāo Sòng-era Línjì foundation — a programmatic claim by a Sì-chuān-bred master to the Héběi / Shǎnxī Línjì heartland traditional identity.
