Liánfēng chánshī yǔlù 蓮峰禪師語錄
Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Lián-fēng by 素 (說), 性深 (等編)
Substantial ten-juan yǔlù of Liánfēng Sù 素 蓮峰素 (b. 1612, still alive in 1691 at age 80, death year unknown), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Bǎichī Xíngyuán 百癡行元 (1611–1662) in the Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 → Tiāntóng / Jīngshān 天童徑山 lineage. Native of Pútián 莆田 (Fújiàn), lay surname Kē 柯; his entire abbatial career was conducted within Xīnghuàfǔ 興化府 (Fújiàn). Compiled by fǎsì Ruòhǎi Xìngshēn 性深 děng biān. The first preface, by his Línjì-lineage fǎdì (younger dharma-brother) Chāopéi 超裴, is dated 丙午臘月望日 = 1666-12-31 (Kāngxī 5, 12th lunar month full moon) at Yǎngtái shānfáng 養苔山房 — by which time Liánfēng had retired to Yúnfēng 雲峰. notBefore = 順治十年癸巳 2/28 = 1653-03-27 (entered Gūshānsì, opening date of the recorded sermons); notAfter = 1666 (preface, capturing the corpus shortly after retirement). Other points of interest
A regional Fújiàn yǔlù — six abbacies all within Xīnghuàfǔ. The záyǒng fills three juan (8–10), unusually substantial for a yǔlù; combined with the more conventional yǔlù sections in juan 1–7, this gives Liánfēng’s collection an almost bièjí 別集 character. The “原書闕” 原書闕 (“original gap”) notation between the two prefaces and the table of contents in juan 1 indicates a known lacuna in the printed exemplar.
