Fózhào Chánshī yǔlù 佛照禪師語録

Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Busshō by 慧曉 Hakuun Egyō (語); compiled by 希白 Kihaku (輯)

About the work

A two-fascicle Recorded Sayings collection of 慧曉 Hakuun Egyō (d. 1298), Kamakura-period Japanese Rinzai-Zen master and dharma-heir of 圓爾 Enni Ben’en at Tōfuku-ji. Posthumous title Busshō Zenji 佛照禪師 (“Buddha-Illuminated Zen Master”). Compiled by his disciple Kihaku 希白.

Abstract

Egyō stands within the Shōichi-ha 聖一派 lineage of the Tōfuku-ji tradition. His Recorded Sayings, in two fascicles, preserves the standard yulu genre — jōdō sermons, hōgo talks, encounter-dialogues, and occasion-verses. His death-date is precisely recorded in X70n1389 as Taitoku 2 (1297), 12th month, 26th day (= January 17, 1298 Western calendar).

The work was compiled by Kihaku — the yi (輯, compiler) designation in the CANWWW respStmt — likely a disciple of the immediate Tōfuku-ji generation.

Significance: a Shōichi-ha yulu of the second post-founding generation; one of the principal Tōfuku-ji documents of the late thirteenth century.
