Dà bān nièpán jīng Fómǔ pǐn 大般涅槃經佛母品

Chapter on the Buddha’s Mother in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra (recension b) anonymous Chinese composition; critical edition by 李際寧 (整理)

About the work

The second of four Dūnhuáng recensions of the apocryphal Fómǔ jīng 佛母經 — see KR6v0018 for full literary description and bibliographic context. This recension is edited from Beijing Library Běi 6628 (月 43). The narrative is fragmentary at the head but preserves the standard six-dream-omens sequence: (1) Mt. Sumeru collapsing and the four oceans drying up, (2) a lion biting her body with her breasts spontaneously yielding milk, (3) fierce fire burning her body, etc.

Abstract

See KR6v0018 for the textual-critical and bibliographic discussion. Recension b is principally distinguished from a in narrative compression and a slightly different ordering of the dream-list. Lǐ Jìníng’s edition uses Běi 6628 alone, with no other collateral.
