Yōubōjué 優波崛 (*Upagupta), Indian Sarvāstivāda master of Mathurā, traditionally counted the fourth patriarch in the Indian Vinaya succession after the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa (following Mahākāśyapa, Ānanda, and Śāṇavāsa). His name is invoked in 僧叡’s preface to [[KR6i0251|Zuòchán sānmèi jīng (T614)]] as one of the Sarvāstivāda yoga masters whose meditation teachings underlie 鳩摩羅什’s Cháng’ān compilation. He is the central figure of the Aśokāvadāna tradition (cf. Āyù-wáng zhuàn 阿育王傳, T2042; Āyù-wáng jīng 阿育王經, T2043).
