Ōtsuka Keisetsu 大塚敬節 (1900–1980), the founder of the modern Japanese Kanpō 漢方 (Sino-Japanese herbal medicine) movement and the principal post-war Japanese clinical authority on the Shānghán lùn canon. A native of Kōchi 高知 Prefecture, he trained as a Western-style physician (graduating from the Kumamoto Medical College in 1922) and subsequently devoted his career to the revival of classical East-Asian medicine after meeting the koihō 古醫方 scholar Yumoto Kyūshin 湯本求真 (cf. KR3ef059) in 1927. He played a central role in founding the Tōyō Igaku Kenkyūjo 東洋醫學研究所 (Tokyo, 1972) and in establishing the Nihon Kanpō Igakkai 日本漢方醫學會. His most influential textual contribution is the 1936 editio princeps of the Kāngpíng 康平 manuscript of the Shānghán lùn (KR3ef003), which placed a pre-Sòng Japanese manuscript witness on the international medical-philological map. His many clinical and textual works include Shōkanron kaisetsu 傷寒論解說, Kanpō yakubutsugaku 漢方藥物學, and the editing of the Kindai Kanpō chosaku-shū 近代漢方著作集 collected edition. Lifedates 1900–1980 are standard.
