Tàixū 太虛
Republican-era Chinese Buddhist reformer, founder of the rénshēng fójiào 人生佛教 (“Buddhism for Human Life”) movement and a principal driver of twentieth-century Chinese Buddhist modernisation. Lay name Lǚ Gànsēn 呂淦森; zì Wéixīn 唯心. Educator, prolific writer, and organiser of the Wǔchāng Buddhist Studies Institute 武昌佛學院 and the Sea-of-Tide Sound 海潮音 journal. His reforms (“three revolutions” of doctrine, system, and property) shaped twentieth-century Chinese Buddhist institutional life.
