Sūn Shèng 孫盛 (courtesy name Guó’ān 國安; 302–373 CE) was an Eastern Jìn official and historian. He served in various government positions under Emperor Mù 穆帝 and Emperor Āi 哀帝. He composed two major historical works: Wèishì Chūnqiū 魏氏春秋 (KR4k0332), covering the Cáo-Wèi period (220–265), and Jìn Yángqiū 晉陽秋 (KR4k0337), covering the Jìn dynasty. His Jìn Yángqiū was famous for the incident in which the powerful general Huán Wēn 桓溫 pressured him to alter his critical account of the Fāntóu 枋頭 campaign; Sūn’s sons initially complied, but after Huán Wēn’s death they restored the original text, so that two recensions circulated. Both works survive only in jíyìběn reconstruction by 湯球 (Qīng dynasty). Sūn Shèng’s historical writing is characterized by meticulous documentation and willingness to criticize powerful contemporaries.
