Huángbò Xīyùn 黃檗希運 (d. Dàzhōng 4 = 850; birth year unrecorded), Táng-dynasty Hóngzhōu-school 洪州宗 Chán master, dharma-heir of Bǎizhàng Huáihǎi 百丈懷海 (720–814, DILA A001897) and grand-disciple of Mǎzǔ Dàoyī 馬祖道一 (709–788). Posthumous title Duànjì chánshī 斷際禪師 (“Chán Master of Severing-the-Limit”). Native of Mǐnxiàn 閩縣 (Fújiàn). Left home young at the Huángbò shān 黃檗山 monastery in Fújiàn; later travelled to Jiāngxī and received dharma-transmission from Bǎizhàng at the Hóngzhōu Bǎizhàng shān 百丈山; thereafter returned to occupy the abbacy of the Huángbò shān 黃檗山 in Gāo’ān xiàn 高安縣 of Hóngzhōu 洪州 (modern Jiāngxī), carrying his old mountain-name with him to the new seat — the convention that every subsequent mountain he resided on was renamed “Huángbò” after his original home. Died Dàzhōng 4 (850).
Xīyùn’s doctrinal signature is yī xīn 一心 (“one mind”) — “all Buddhas and all sentient beings are nothing but one mind, and there is no separate dharma”; the identification of mind with Buddha; the rejection of xiūzhèng 修證 (cultivation-and-verification) as obscuring rather than producing awakening; and the insistence on direct recognition that cǐ xīn jí shì fó 此心即是佛 (“this mind is simply the Buddha”). His teaching is the doctrinal bridge between Mǎzǔ Dàoyī’s Hóngzhōu-school formulations and Línjì Yìxuán’s 臨濟義玄 own, more polemically-direct yǔlù voice.
Principal recorded dharma-heirs: Línjì Yìxuán 臨濟義玄 (d. 867, DILA A003627) — founder of the Línjì 臨濟 school, one of the Five Houses of classical Chán; Chǔnán 楚南 (A003631); Língguān 靈觀 (A003632); and several others. The Línjì lineage that subsequently dominated East-Asian Chán / Sŏn / Zen descends entirely through Xīyùn.
