Zhāng Yàosūn 張曜孫 (1808–1863, Zhòngyuǎn 仲遠 and Shēngfǔ 升甫, hào Fùshēng 復生), late-Qīng official, philologist, and obstetrical specialist of Yánghú 陽湖 (Jiāngsū). CBDB 55133.

Member of the celebrated Yánghú Zhāng literary family — his uncle was the great prose-master Zhāng Huìyán 張惠言 (1761–1802), founder of the Yánghú school of -criticism; his father was Zhāng Qí 張琦 (a noted physician and -poet, author of Sùlíng yīyán 素靈醫言). The family was strongly literary-medical, with multiple generations practising medicine alongside official careers.

Examination and career. Jǔrén of Dàoguāng yǐwèi 1835. Held minor official posts in Húběi. After the Tàipíng disturbances destabilised the lower Yángzǐ, he lived in retreat at Wǔchāng 武昌 and devoted himself to medical practice, in which he had been trained from boyhood by his father.

Medical œuvre.

  • Chǎnyùn jí 產孕集 (KR3ei059) — a concise obstetrical manual; the work for which he is best remembered as a medical author.
  • Chóngdìng chǎnyùn jí 重訂產孕集 (KR3ei060) — his own revised and supplemented edition of the above.
  • Numerous prefaces and clinical notes preserved in the collected works of his family circle.

Literary œuvre. Tóngshēng cǎo 同聲艸 (-collection), participating in the late-Qīng Chángzhōu -school revival. Edited several anthologies of his family’s -compositions.
