Xú Shùgǔ 徐樹穀 ( Yìchū 藝初), of Kūnshān 崑山 (Jiāngsū). Kāngxī yǐchǒu (1685) jìnshì; rose to Shāndōng dào jiānchá yùshǐ (Investigating Censor for the Shāndōng Circuit). Brother of Xú Jiǒng 徐炯 徐炯 (Kāngxī rénxū 1682 jìnshì).

Xú Shùgǔ’s principal work in the corpus is the jiān (philological gloss) component of the Lǐ Yìshān wénjí jiānzhù KR4c0076 — the Xú brothers’ Qīng critical edition of Lǐ Shāngyǐn’s 李商隱 prose, with Xú Jiǒng providing the zhù (commentary). Xú Shùgǔ’s jiān attended to historical-event verification, while his brother handled allusion-tracing.

The collaboration produced one of the principal works in the Qīng recovery of WǎnTáng prose. Subsequent Féng Hào 馮浩 (mid-Qián-lóng) corrected several attributional and interpretive errors in the Xú edition, but kept it as the base text. CBDB has no matching entry; the Xú brothers’ careers are documented in the Kūnshān fùzhì and contemporary jīnshēn records.
