Chè 徹 (Miàozhàn Zǒngdàorén 玅湛總道人)
Mid-17th-century Chinese Buddhist nun (bǐqiūní 比丘尼) and Chán-literary practitioner. Dharma-name 徹 徹 (single character, per the Kanripo catalog); hào Miàozhàn 玅湛 (“Wondrous-Deep”), Zǒngdàorén 總道人 (“Principal Daoist”). Lay name and lifedates unrecorded.
Born into a prominent late-Míng civil-service family and married into the Xú 徐 family. Her father-in-law died in Míng-loyalist resistance (xùn jié 殉節 “died for virtue”) at Suízhōu 隨州 during the 1644 collapse, receiving the posthumous imperial title Tàipú qīng 太僕卿 (Chief Gentleman-Usher of Equipage). Her grandfather-in-law had served as Shǎo sīmǎ 少司馬 (Vice-Minister of War).
After her husband’s death, took tonsure and travelled to Língyánsì 靈巖寺 (Sūzhōu) to receive full precepts and undertake Chán training under Tuìwēng Hóngchú 退翁弘儲 (1605–1672), the dharma-heir of Hànyuè Fǎzàng 漢月法藏. Through intensive practice (reportedly giving up sleep and food for extended periods), she attained awakening and received dharma-transmission alongside her Chán-sister Língruì Fúānzhǔ 靈瑞符菴主.
The two nuns together produced the Sòng gǔ hé xiǎng jí 頌古合響集 KR6q0204 — a collection of harmonizing verse-commentaries on classical Chán cases, published with a preface by the lay Buddhist Zhāng Yǒuyù 張有譽. The work is among the most significant surviving documents of seventeenth-century Chinese women’s Chán practice.

A different mid-17th-century Chinese Chán nun with fǎhuì 徹: Jìzǒng Chè 季總徹 / 繼總 (= Bǎochí Jìzǒng 寶持繼總, 1606–1678), the author of KR6q0429 《季總徹禪師語錄》. To be distinguished from the 徹 = Miàozhàn Chè above.
Lineage. LínjìYángqí Chán nun in the Mìyún Yuánwù line — not the Hànyuè Fǎzàng sub-line of the Miàozhàn Chè. Double-transmission: first sealed by Shāncí Tōngjì 山茨通際 (Mi-yun heir at Héngshān) c. 1638; second-transmission-validated by Wànrú Tōngwēi 萬如通微 (at KR6q0404) c. 1651–52. Fǎhuì 繼總 繼總 (= 季總, variant-writing); hào 寶持 寶持 (“Treasure-Preservation”).
Lay surname Liú 劉, of Húguǎng Héngzhōufǔ 湖廣衡州府 (Héngyáng, Húnán). Father Liú Shànzhǎng 劉善長; mother Sòngshì 宋氏. Lifedates 萬曆 34 丙午 8.18 – 康熙 17 = ~18 September 1606 – 1678, age 73.
Unique widowhood-and-vengeance narrative. Married to a Chén 陳 official posted to Guǎngxī; husband died violently in office. Jìzǒng filed a báijiǎn 白簡 official accusation and secured legal vengeance before renouncing lay life — a distinctive “loyal-widow → Chán-nun” biographical trajectory documented by Grant 2009 ch. 6.
Sealing under Shāncí Tōngjì (1636–50). Trained at Yānxiáfēng on Héngshān; decisive thunder-storm awakening after 49-day bìguān. Age 34 = 1639: formal tonsure and full precepts. Continued training through Shāncí’s death c. 1650; supervised pagoda-burial. Second-transmission-tour (1650–52). Multi-stop pilgrimage: Hànkǒu → Jīnlíng → Zhènjiāng Hèlínsì 鶴林寺 (1651.4, meeting Mùyún Tōngmén) → Jiáshān 夾山 (Ruòān Tōngwèn 箬菴通問) → Lóngchíshān 龍池山 (Wànrú Tōngwēi, formal senior-lineage validation).
Abbacy career. 順治甲午 2.16 (= 24 March 1654): first abbacy at Gūsū Huìdēng Chányuàn 姑蘇慧燈禪院. Additional seats: Zhāoyáng Pǔdùān 朝陽普度菴 (site of the 1655-era xíngshí); Kūnshān; Méixī 梅溪. Lived to 1678.
