Shěn Liáo 沈遼 (1032–1085), zì Ruìdá 叡達, of Qiántáng 錢塘 (Hángzhōu). Younger brother of Shěn Gòu 沈遘 (Wéntōng 文通) and nephew (zhí 姪) of Shěn Kuò 沈括 沈括. Through his elder brother’s yīn (hereditary) privilege held the Jiàn Shòuzhōu jiǔshuì 監壽州酒税 (supervisor of Shòuzhōu 壽州 wine tax). At the start of Xīníng (1068–) became Shěnguān xīyuàn zhǔbù (Recorder, West Bureau of Selection); later Tàichángsì fènglǐláng (Worship-Rituals Gentleman of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices), seconded as Huátíngxiàn 華亭縣 magistrate. Implicated in a case (zuò shì 坐事) and exiled to Yǒngzhōu 永州, then transferred to Chízhōu 池州, where he built a hermitage at Qíshān 齊山, taking the hào Yúncháo 雲巢 (“cloud-nest”); did not return to office. Author of Yúncháo biān 雲巢編 KR4d0103. Praised as a poet by Wáng Ānshí (who likened him to Xiè Ānshí and Táo Yuānmíng) and corresponded with Huáng Tíngjiān 黃庭堅 黃庭堅; the Sìkù tíyào nevertheless places him in the Jiāngxī school’s lineage rather than the Táo-style.
