Jūqú Méngxùn 沮渠蒙遜 (368–433, r. 401–433), founder and ruler of the Northern Liáng 北涼 state in the Hexi corridor, of Xiōngnú (Lúshuǐhú 盧水胡) descent. A devout patron of Buddhism, he established his capital at Gūzāng 姑臧 (modern Wǔwēi 武威) as a major translation centre, supporting 曇無讖 Dharmakṣema in producing the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra (T374), the Suvarṇaprabhāsa and many other works. He ordered Dharmakṣema’s assassination en route to Khotan in 433. His patronage made Gūzāng a key node in the transmission of Buddhism between Central Asia and China during the early fifth century.
