Dòngshān 洞山 (Dòngshān Liángjiè 洞山良价)
Late-Tang Chán master and the founding patriarch (with his dharma-heir Cáoshān Běnjì 曹山本寂) of the Cáodòng house 曹洞宗 of Chinese Chan. Native of Kuàijī 會稽; abbot at Dòngshān 洞山 in Jiāngxī, from which his designation derives. Posthumous title Wùběn dàshī 悟本大師. Author of the Wǔ-wèi-jūn-chén 五位君臣 doctrinal scheme and the celebrated awakening verse beginning 「切忌從他覓 迢迢與我疏 我今獨自往 處處得逢渠」 (“strictly avoid seeking from another — far apart and unrelated to me; today I go alone, and everywhere meet him…”) with the famous closing 「渠今正是我 我今不是渠」 (“he now is precisely me; I now am not him”), the foundational verse of Cáodòng doctrinal self-understanding.
