Wáng Zhì 王銍 (fl. 1122–1144), zì Xìngzhī 性之, hào Xuěxī 雪溪, native of Rǔyīn 汝陰 (modern Ānhuī, Fùyáng). Son of Wáng Píngzhī 王萍之 (a Northern-Sòng yǐngzǐ (yīn) descendant). Active in the late Northern Sòng / early Southern Sòng. Author of the Mòjì 默記, Bù shìér xiǎomíng lù bǔyí 補侍兒小名錄補遺, and Xuěxī jí 雪溪集 KR4d0193.
The Sìkù editors of KR4d0193 note that Wáng’s poetic style is close to Wēn Tíngyún 溫庭筠 and Lǐ Shāngyǐn (晚唐 Late-Tang). Wáng Shìzhēn’s 王士禎 Jūyì lù criticised Wáng Zhì’s poetry as not very skillful but admired the appended Lúshān sēng Kěhé héshī one piece — the Sìkù editors disagree, considering this not a definitive judgment.
The collection in 5 juǎn (Sìkù version) is a fraction of the 8-juǎn recension recorded by Chén Zhènsūn KR3h0011 and Sòng shǐ Yìwénzhì. Three identifiable losses: a Wáng Wénrú Qúān shī; a Shāncūn shī; and a Yúnménsì shī — all preserved in other Sòng bǐjì but absent from the 5-juǎn recension.
The Sìkù editors flag two of Wáng’s philological errors: (a) his Báitóu yín xù incorrectly drew on Wú Jīng’s 吳兢 Yuèfǔ jiětí rather than the original Xījīng zájì (which though false-attributed predates Wú Jīng and is the source of Wú’s record); (b) Wáng claimed Sòngzhì records Wénjūn’s poem, when in fact the Sòngshū yuèzhì records Báitóu yín as gǔcí (anonymous), not as Wénjūn’s. These are taken as cautionary instances of philological kǎozhèng zhī nán (the difficulty of textual research).
