In youth he studied the Confucian classics and was distinguished for breadth of memory and skill in shīwén 詩文 composition. He took ordination at the Miánzhōu Kāiyuánsì 緜州開元寺 and concentrated on canonical scriptural-philosophical study. His literary skills brought him imperial service in the inner court (仕於大內), where he was much honoured. In late life he retired to his native mountain and resided at the Zǐzhōu Huìyìsì 慈義寺 in Zǐzhōu 梓州 (Sāntái 三臺, Sìchuān), devoting his remaining years to lecture-and-composition. He died in Yuánhé 15 = 820, age unrecorded.
His principal Kanripo work is the 《北山錄》 Běishān lù (KR6r0146, T2113, 10 juan, ca. 806–820) — a 16-chapter Buddhist scholarly anthology integrating Tiāntái-school doctrine with Confucian-Buddhist comparative philosophy, an unusually ambitious Tang Buddhist scholarly composition. He also produced more than ten other works including the 《法華玄箋》 Fǎhuá xuánjiān, the 《釋氏年誌》 Shìshì niánzhì, and the 《北山參玄語錄》 Bēishān cānxuán yǔlù (some preserved under variant titles).
