Jiéliú Xíngcè 截流行策 (1628–1682), zì Mènghān 夢憨 (lay given-name) and Réncè 仁策 (monastic name variant); late-Míng / early-Qīng Línjì 臨濟 Yángqí-school 楊岐派 Chán monk, subsequently one of the major Pure Land practitioners of the Qīng — counted traditionally as the tenth Patriarch of the Chinese Pure Land lineage. Native of Yíxīng 宜興 (Jiāngsū), lay surname Jiǎng 蔣.
Entered the Wǔlín Lǐ’ān sì 武林理安寺 at age 23 to study Chán under Ruòān Tōngwèn 箬菴通問 (DILA A013268); practised five years of never-lying-down (bù dǎo dān 不倒單) continuous Chán sitting before attaining realisation. Subsequently held a residence at the Bàoēn sì 報恩寺 where he met Xī’ān Yīng 息庵瑛, who encouraged his turn to Pure Land devotional practice. Further studied Tiāntái 天台 doctrine under Qiántáng Qiáoshí 錢塘樵石, practising the Fǎhuā sānmèi 法華三昧.
In Kāngxī 2 (1663) established the Liánfūān 蓮柎庵 (“Lotus-Base Hermitage”) on the West Brook of Fǎhuāshān 法華山 in Hángzhōu for intensive Pure Land practice. In Kāngxī 9 (1670) he was invited to reside at the Yùshān Pǔrén yuàn 虞山普仁院, where he revived the Liánshè 蓮社 (“Lotus Society”) devotional-fellowship tradition. Died on Kāngxī 21.7.19 (21 August 1682), aged 55.
Xíngcè’s major works include:
- Jīn’gāng jīng shū jì huìbiān 金剛經疏記會編 (10 juan, 1663) — a combined edition of Zōngmì’s Jīn’gāng jīng shū and Zǐxuán’s Zhuǎn yào kān dìng jì;
- Bǎo jìng sānmèi běn yì 寶鏡三昧本義 (KR6q0129, X63 n1237) — his Cáodòng doctrinal exposition;
- Quàn fā zhēn xìn wén 勸發真信文 — a short Pure Land exhortation;
- Qǐ yī xīn jīngjìn niàn fó qī qī guī shì 起一心精進念佛七期規式 — a Pure Land ritual manual;
- Lèngyán jīng shì zhì yuán tōng zhāng 楞嚴經勢至圓通章 — a commentary on the Mahāsthāmaprāpta chapter of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra.
