Northern-Sòng-era Buddhist scholar-monk, granted the imperial honorific Guǎngyǎn dàshī 廣演大師 (“Master of Broad Elaboration”). Lifedates and biographical details unknown; the floruit given here (980–1100) reflects the Northern Sòng imperial translation-bureau period during which his attested honorific was actively conferred.
His attested colophonic title — 譯經證義講經律論廣演大師 (“Master of Broad Elaboration, Translation-Bureau Authenticator-of-Sense, Lecturer on Sūtra-Vinaya-Treatises”) — is a complex Northern Sòng imperial title indicating service in the Yìjīng yuàn 譯經院 imperial translation bureau as a zhèngyì (authenticator-of-sense) and as a multi-discipline lecturer. The bureau was active from 982 onward.
His three attested works (DILA A001577) all have the xínghéng / xiàohéng / fǎhéng chāo (formal “balance-judging notes”) suffix:
- Yúlánpén jīng shū xiàohéng chāo 盂蘭盆經疏孝衡鈔 (X375) — sub-commentary on the Yúlánpénjīng
- Yúlánpén jīng shū xiàohéng chāo kē 盂蘭盆經疏孝衡鈔科 (X374) — kēwén outline of the same
- Rénwáng jīng shū fǎhéng chāo 仁王經疏法衡鈔 (X519 = KR6c0214) — six-fascicle sub-commentary on Liángbì’s Rénwángjīng shū (T1709)
Catalog correction: the project catalog meta places Yùróng in the Tang dynasty, but the DILA Buddhist Studies Person Authority records him as Sòng, and the imperial Yìjīngyuàn honorific in his colophonic title points unambiguously to the Northern Sòng translation bureau (active from 982). The dynasty is given here as 宋 in keeping with the DILA / colophonic evidence.
He represents the Northern Sòng imperial translation-bureau scholar-monk class, producing substantial sub-commentary materials on canonical Mahāyāna sūtras while serving the imperial Yìjīngyuàn.
