Dámò 達默 (Qīng, mid-19th c.)

A Qīng Pure Land monk associated with the Hóngluóshān 紅螺山 (north of Beijing) — the Pure Land lineage of Zīfúsì 資福寺 / Bìyuàn 碧雲 that produced the late-Qīng / Republican Pure Land master Yìnguāng 印光. He is known principally as the author of the substantive zàochāo 造鈔 (“composed sub-commentary”) on 智旭 Ǒuyì Zhìxù’s Ēmítuó jīng yàojiě 阿彌陀經要解 — the resulting composite work being the Ēmítuó jīng yàojiě biànméngchāo 阿彌陀經要解便蒙鈔 KR6p0025. The work was completed in three juǎn and circulated alongside Zhìxù’s Yàojiě as the standard Qīng Pure Land textbook, jointly cut with 達林 Dámò’s collaborator/co-edition’s contributor Dálín 達林 (參訂).

His exact lifedates are not preserved. The biànméngchāo itself is datable to the mid-nineteenth century from the prefatory material; the title biàn méng 便蒙 (“convenient for the unenlightened”) implies a popularising pedagogical aim consistent with the late-Qīng Pure Land revival sponsored by the Hóngluóshān lineage.
