Yúnqī jìngtǔ huìyǔ 雲棲淨土彙語
Anthology of [Yúnqī Zhūhóng’s] Sayings on the Pure Land by 虞執西 (Yú Zhíxī, 錄) and 嚴培西 (Yán Péixī, 錄)
About the work
A single-juǎn anthology of 袾宏 Yúnqī Zhūhóng’s Pure Land sayings (jìngtǔ yǔ 淨土語) collated from across Yúnqī’s prose corpus by his lay-Buddhist disciples 虞執西 Yú Zhíxī and 嚴培西 Yán Péixī in the early seventeenth century, shortly after Yúnqī’s death in 1615.
Abstract
Yúnqī’s Pure Land writings are scattered across many works — the Ēmítuó jīng shūchāo KR6p0028, the Jìngtǔ yíbiàn KR6p0058, the Dá sìshíbā wèn KR6p0063, the Xīfāng yuànwén KR6p0064, plus prefaces, letters, and miscellaneous prose pieces preserved in his collected works the Yúnqī fǎhuì 雲棲法彙. The Huìyǔ extracts and re-organises Yúnqī’s most pointed and pastoral Pure Land sayings into a single accessible volume, organised thematically rather than by source-text: opening sections on the doctrinal foundations of Pure Land devotion; sections on practical niànfó practice; sections on the deathbed zhìniàn; sections of pastoral counsel directed to lay-Buddhist householders and women; sections of polemical responses to Chán objections.
The work belongs to the post-mortem consolidation of Yúnqī’s intellectual legacy carried out by his lay-Buddhist circle in the decades after his death. Together with the collected Yúnqī fǎhuì, the Wǎngshēng jí, and the various individual Pure Land writings, the Huìyǔ establishes Yúnqī as the doctrinal centre of late-Míng Pure Land Buddhism — a status that the subsequent Qīng-period Pure Land masters (Xǐng’ān Shíxián 實賢, Hóngluó Dámò 達默, etc.) consistently reinforced.
The text is preserved in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 (X1170). No preface fixes a precise composition date; the bracket adopted (1620–1660) covers the early to mid seventeenth century during which the Yúnqī lay-Buddhist circle was consolidating his legacy.
