Shénàyéshě 闍那耶舍 (Skt. Jinayaśa / Jñānayaśa; Chinese gloss Shèngmíng 勝名 “Victory-Fame” or Zàngchēng 藏稱 “Treasury-Renown”; DILA Authority A001842; Northern Zhōu period, lifedates not securely recorded) was a central Indian (Magadha 摩揭陀國) Buddhist scholar-monk and translator. According to Dào-xuān’s Xù gāosēng zhuàn 續高僧傳 (T2060), he travelled to China during the Northern Zhōu (557–581) bringing with him two disciples — Yēshě-juéduō 耶舍崛多 (Yaśogupta) and Shénàjuéduō 闍那崛多 (Jñānagupta) — who would themselves become major translators of the early Suí. He worked in Cháng’ān, primarily at the Sì-tiānwáng-sì 四天王寺 and Guī-shèng-sì 歸聖寺, under the patronage of the Northern Zhōu Dà-zhǒngzǎi 大冡宰 Yǔwén Hù 宇文護. His translation output is small (three works in eight fascicles, per the catalogues), but historically significant: it includes the Dàshèng tóngxìng jīng 大乘同性經 (KR6i0330, T673), the Shíyīmiàn Guānshìyīn shén-zhòu jīng 十一面觀世音神呪經 (T1070), and the supplementary chapters of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra (the Gēng-guǎng shòuliàng 更廣壽量, Dàbiàn-tuóluóní 大辯陀羅尼, etc., subsequently incorporated by 寶貴 into KR6i0302). The Northern Zhōu translation activity with which Jñānayaśa is associated is the principal channel through which the tathāgatagarbha and Yogācāra literature was transmitted between the Northern Wèi and Suí translation projects.
