Chén Tíngjìng 陳廷敬 (1639–1712), Zǐduān 子端, hào Shuōyán 說巖 / Wǔtíng 午亭, native of Zézhōu 澤州 (Shānxī). One of the most senior officials of the Kāngxī court, eventually rising to Wényuāngé Dàxuéshì 文淵閣大學士 (Grand Secretary). He passed the jìn shì in 1658 (順治 15) at age 19, then served progressively as Hanlin academician, Vice-Minister of Rites, Minister of Personnel, and concluded his career as Grand Secretary 1710–1712. Principal editor of the Kāngxī zìdiǎn 康熙字典 (commission begun 1710), the Pèi wén yùn fǔ 佩文韻府, and the Zhū zǐ quán shū 朱子全書 — three of the most consequential imperial publishing projects of the Kāngxī era. Strict Sòng-school orthodox in his learning, but on personal religious sentiment respected popular merit-tract Daoism: he contributed and co-funded the printing-preface (signed Zézhōu Chén Tíngjìng, dated summer 1706, Kāngxī 45) to the Tài shàng gǎn yìng piān jí zhù compiled by his colleague Zhā Dànyuǎn 查澹遠 (cf.
