Hé Guózōng 何國宗
Native of Dàxīng 大興 (Beijing area; some sources give Héběi). Birth year not securely recorded; died Qiánlóng 31 (1766).
Jìnshì of Kāngxī 51 (1712), jíshì (probationary appointment) at the Hànlín. Senior position in Kāngxī’s mathematical-and-astronomical academy (the Méngyǎng zhāi 蒙養齋, established 1713 as the imperial workshop for the Lǜlì yuānyuán compilation). Successive offices: Hànlínyuàn shìjiǎngxuéshì 翰林院侍讲学士 (Hànlín Reader-Lecturer); Lǐbù shìláng 禮部侍郎 (Vice Minister of Rites); Jiǎnzhèng 檢正 (Inspector).
Lead Chinese-mathematical-staff editor of all three principal volumes of the Lǜlì yuānyuán synthesis: the KR3f0018 Lìxiàng kǎochéng (Investigation of the Calendrical Phenomena), the Lǜlǚ zhèngyì (Pitch-Pipes), and the Shùlǐ jīngyùn (Mathematics). His name appears as the senior huìbiān 彙編 (gathering-and-compiling editor) on the Lìxiàng kǎochéng personnel list of Yōngzhèng 2 (1724). Hé continued as principal editor on the Qián-lóng-period KR3f0019 Lìxiàng kǎochéng hòubiān (1742) and the KR3f0020 Qīndìng yíxiàng kǎochéng (1744) — his sustained service across three reigns making him probably the single most consequential Chinese-mathematical bureaucrat of the high-Qīng synthesis-period.
His brothers Hé Guódòng 何國棟 (Magistrate of Tīngzhōu in Fújiàn) and Hé Guózhù 何國柱 (Director-of-the-Qīntiānjiān-Left-Section) also held offices in the Méngyǎng zhāi / Qīntiānjiān circuit; the Hé family of Dàxīng was one of the principal hereditary mathematical-astronomical lines of the high Qīng.
