Liú Qiú 劉虬

Southern-Qí lay Buddhist scholar (433–495) of Jīngzhōu 荊州, sometimes styled the Jīngzhōu yǐnshì 荊州隱士 (“hermit of Jīngzhōu”). Author of the celebrated Wúliàngyì jīng xù 無量義經序 (preface to the Wúliàngyì jīng, KR6d0118) whose seven-period (七階) classification of the Buddha’s teaching became a foundational document of southern Sinitic Lotus exegesis, anticipating the Liáng-period exegesis of 法雲 Fǎyún, 僧旻 Sēngmín, and 智藏 Zhìzàng, and the Suí Tiāntái systematisation under 智顗 Zhìyǐ.
