Late-Yuán / early-Míng Tiāntái-school exegete and imperial Buddhist editor, sobriquets Tàipú 太璞 (also written 大璞) and Jù’ān 具菴. Native of Yúyáo 餘姚 (in modern Zhèjiāng). Lifedates 1320–1385: died Hóngwǔ 18 (1385), eleventh month, seventeenth day, age 66, per the Xù fózǔ tǒngjì 續佛祖統紀 j. 2.
Trained in the Tiāntái scholastic tradition, he became an imperial textual collaborator of 宗泐 (1318–1390) under the Hóngwǔ emperor’s programme to produce authoritative state-sponsored Buddhist commentaries. The pair co-edited the three so-called “imperially-decreed commentaries” of Hóngwǔ 11 (1378): the Bōrě bōluómìduō xīn jīng zhùjiě 般若波羅蜜多心經註解 (T1714 = KR6c0141), the Jīngāng bōrě bōluómì jīng zhùjiě 金剛般若波羅蜜經註解, and the Léngqié ābáduóluó bǎojīng zhùjiě 楞伽阿跋多羅寶經註解 — each prefaced by the Hóngwǔ emperor in person. The pairing of a Línjì Chan abbot (Zōnglè) with a Tiāntái doctrinal scholar (Rúqǐ) reflects the Hóngwǔ programme of cross-school imperial canonisation.
Beyond the imperial commentaries his works include various Tiāntái-style sub-commentaries in the Wàn xùzàng 卍續藏. He represents the late-Yuán tradition of Tiāntái scholasticism transmitted from Sòng masters via the Wú region, here repurposed into the new Míng state-Buddhist programme.
