Yáo Nài 姚鼐 (1732–1815), Jīchuán 姬傳, hào Xībào 惜抱 (whence the studio name Xībàoxuān 惜抱軒), native of Tóngchéng 桐城, Ānhuī. The third-generation master of the Tóngchéng 桐城 school of gǔwén prose, after 方苞 Fāng Bāo and 劉大櫆 Liú Dàkuí (his immediate teacher). Jìnshì of Qiánlóng 28 (1763), Hànlín biānxiū. He served briefly (1773–1774) as a zǒngcuǎn 總纂 / sub-editor on the Sìkù quán shū editorial board but withdrew in disagreement with the dominant evidential-research approach of 戴震 Dài Zhèn and the central editorial circle. From 1774 until his death he led the Yángzhōu Méihuā 揚州梅花, Ānqìng Jǐngshān 安慶敬山, Shèxiàn Zǐyáng 歙縣紫陽, and (from 1801) Nánjīng Zhōngshān 鍾山 academies in succession — over forty years of academic leadership. His principal theoretical contribution is the integration of yìlǐ 義理 (Sòng moral metaphysics), kǎojù 考據 (HànQīng philology), and cízhāng 詞章 (literary craft) as a single learning, and the yánggāng / yīnróu 陽剛陰柔 typology of literary style. Major works: Xībàoxuān wénjí KR4f0052, Xībàoxuān shījí, Gǔwéncí lèizuǎn 古文辭類纂 (the most widely used Qīng prose anthology), Lǎozǐ zhāngyì 老子章義, Jiǔjīng shuō 九經說, Zuǒ zhuàn bǔ zhù 左傳補註.
