Shǒujiān 守堅, styled Míngshí dàshī 明識大師 (Great Master of Clear Discernment) and granted the purple robe (cìzǐ 賜紫), was a disciple (ménrén 門人) of Yúnmén Wényǎn 雲門文偃 (864–949) and the principal compiler of his master’s recorded sayings. DILA A000360 classifies him as a Northern Sòng figure on the basis that the Shǒujiān compilation circulated into the Northern Sòng and was collated and reprinted by Sū Xiè 蘇澥 in Xīníng 9 = 1076 (KR6q0073, T47 n1988). No independent biography, birth/death dates, or native place are recorded. The same DILA entry attributes to him both the Yúnmén Kuāngzhēn chánshī guǎnglù 雲門匡真禪師廣錄 (T1988) and the shorter Yúnmén Kuāngzhēn chánshī yǔlù 雲門匡真禪師語錄 (JB138), suggesting that Shǒujiān assembled multiple distinct versions of Yúnmén’s sayings in the post-949 period.
